She is surprised if that turns out to be a variable, and begins to think that maybe this time things will be different. Choosing the cage make them think that it is a constant, and that things probably aren't going to be any different, which is what the sister expects. The brother is smug because he wants things to change. did anyone pick the cage? Did it have a payoff I didn't notice as well? Was it cosmetic or cosmic? There was no further mention of the broach, however. I chose bird because i thought it represented freedom and and the sister Lutese seemed mildly surprised, like this was not what she expected in this whole mess her brother started, while he seemed smug. You know, on the subject of this (sort of), there is the choice on the beach between the broaches, either a bird or a cage. It should come as no surprise then that Comstock's hubris allowed him to believe that Elizabeth wouldn't come to that conclusion on her own. It's only when she puts it all together with C-A-G-E that she sees the Whistler not as a tool to summon, but a tool to control, which all goes to shit anyways when the siphon is destroyed. After all, it was only when the Luteces made it clear that she realized the melody was powerless without the right instrument. Up until that point it is likely that Elizabeth had no idea of the Whistler's power other than the fact that when it played the tune, Songbird showed up. Look at the Irish Rebellion of 1916.Īnd speaking to the way Songbird behaves, again, remember that taking control of it with the Whistler at the end was an act of desperation brought on by the clue provided by old Elizabeth. It's a fairly common thing for a people to enter open rebellion even if they know they have no hope of winning or surviving. Maybe they felt his death would be worth it. It's possible that the attack on the zeppelin was their all-in casualties be damned attempt to take out Comstock. Once she died, it became anyone's guess as to what the Vox were thinking. They very well may have had ideas on eliminating Songbird but the only link to them was Fitzroy. It would be like saying the Death Star was a really poor weapon because all it took was Luke shooting some missiles at it to blow the whole thing up.Īs far as the Vox are concerned, who knows. Within the context of the game, Booker is essentially a superhero, and even he was barely able to get her out alive, relying a fair deal on luck and happenstance. It was able to keep Elizabeth in her cage, as it were, with no difficulties until Booker arrived. I really like how well the whole story seems to mesh where the Songbird seems to be the only thing that sticks out as "oddly I'm not sure what you mean about it serving its purpose very poorly. Why would Comstock (or for that matter Fink) give "control" of it to Elizabeth? It makes sense to teach her to sing the song to summon it to her location while she was in the tower but as a method to deter her from leaving or forcing her to return it is very poor. It was said in the game that it was built to protect Elizabeth but it seemed to either be very poor at that job or taking a very long time to become a threat. It would only go where the golden Comstock music-box statues were. The C-A-G-E song was actually what summoned it to a specific location which is why it wasn't constantly up Booker's ass the entire game. It was built to protect and tend to Elizabeth, as well as serve as a symbol of Comstock's strength to the citizens of Columbia. Songbird only seemed to care about Elizabeth at the most convenient/inconvenient moments so I'm at a loss as to what purpose it really has. I thought that it was part of "a Comstock trap" where the Vox started to move against the city, the music would stop playing and Songbird would go nuts but hat didn't happen. I suspected the music you could hear all over the city was to keep Songbird calm where it was a sort of "fail safe". StarvingGamer is correct but I'm still not sure what "purpose" it is supposed to have beyond harassing Booker which seems paradoxical.
